HelloFresh and Gobble Box: Side By Side!

hellofresh gobble box.jpg

I have been trying different meal kit delivery boxes, and I have to say – this is the TASTIEST experimentation I could possibly get into. Basically everything we’ve eaten has been super delicious. However, I have noticed that between the two I’ve tried – HelloFresh and Gobble Box – each have their own strengths. So I thought I’d write about the ways in which each box succeeds, side by side.

Exotic Recipes – Gobble box definitely wins this one – I’ve enjoyed trying things like paneer and new spice combinations, and I am always surprised by the variety and combinations of side dishes. HelloFresh wins in the next category.

Recognizable Comfort Food – HelloFresh offers really nice meals that seem like something normal to eat; I’m not forcing Husband to try a new thing every time we get one. Usually a veggie-driven side dish, like green beans, comes across as simple but perfect because I didn’t have to choose it and get it ready to cook.

High-Quality Meats – Honestly, both win on this front. I don’t buy expensive cuts of meat and we end up eating a lot of chicken in my house, so the fact that I can get a non-chicken meat that is usually sustainably sourced for every meal (or great vegetarian options!) really brings the value for me.

Speed of Cooking – Here is where Gobble Box really shines. True, you don’t get the zen satisfaction of chopping up sweet potatoes for a good long while, but Gobble Box gives you completely prepped foods that are ready in 15 to 20 minutes, start to finish. HelloFresh is up front about the fact that their meals usually take more like 30-45 minutes to prepare. Both are nice, honestly: when I want to cook with Husband, a nice leisurely meal with plenty for both of us to do is nice, and when we are in a scramble, the 15 minute hustle meal works great.

So that’s what I see as the difference, this far into my off-and-on subscriptions. I pause one kit while I get the other, since I cannot use enough food to merit 2 kits per week. If you are interested in trying either, HelloFresh will give you 40 dollars off the first kit, and Gobble Box will let you try one totally free!

I haven’t yet tried Gobble Box, but I had really mixed luck with Hello Fresh, like getting ingredients that weren’t fresh (spoiled greens) or NOT getting all the ingredients. Have you run into any issues like that with either service? @mirymom1 from

I haven’t had an issue like that, but one of the meat packages did once rupture in transit. They were willing to give me a small credit on my next box because of the loss, so I thought they handled it well, but it is not good if they didn’t get you the full ingredients or the fresh ones!

I recently signed my husband up for Freshly since he works out of town. The meals are already prepared- you just warm them up. I wasn’t sure what the quality would be like but he LOVES them. He says they taste just like a home cooked meal if he adds a little of the seasoning we like. Plus everything is gluten free and health conscious. It’s a life saver for someone like him who works 15+ hour days. I’m considering Hello Fresh for me at home with my toddler just to help cut down on trips to the grocery store.
